A Red Cross volunteer takes water and Gatorade to firefighters working a grass fire on Frog Pond road near Southmayd Friday afternoon.

Red Cross had been on scene at a different location for some time. When they showed up where I was I picked a good spot and had the shot in my head. I kneeled down for about 15 minutes waiting for one of the volunteers to do what I wanted. This volunteer even asked me at one point if I was ok. I told her yes and thought to myself that I wish I could just tell her what I wanted. Darn ethics!!

Nearby residents watch as a grass fire burns just off Frog Pond road near Southmayd Friday afternoon. Firefighters were able to burn grass aroun homes to keep the fires from spreading to them. Some barns were damaged during the grass fire though.

As I made my way to the fire I tried to get a shot that summed up it’s size. Not to far from the command center I saw these people watching it burn. Most of them lived nearby and I’m sure were a little nervous.

Firefighters rehab with watter and cool wet rags at the scene of a grass fire on Frog Pond road near Southmayd Friday afternoon.

I saw this developing seconds before with the two walking up. The fire fighter in the foreground handed the other firefighter a wet rag. I was thinking it would be nice if he put it on his head like the firefighters usually do. When he looked at the rehab ambulance just behind me I knew I had a good shot.
